Ice packs became one of my absolute essentials during both my ALIF and ACDF recovery. From calming incision pain to easing deep aches in my back and neck, each type served its own little purpose. Here are the ones I personally used and how they helped.
This was my go-to during lumbar fusion recovery. It straps around your waist, stays in place, and hits the exact spot that needed relief without slipping. Great for walking around or even just sitting up in bed. Highly recommend if your pain centers in your lower back or sciatic area.
These Reusable Hot and Cold Gel Ice Packs were my go-to for both lumbar and neck recovery. After my ALIF surgery (which was done through the front), I used them directly on my stomach to ease the deep surgical soreness. Now, post ACDF, I rotate them onto my shoulders.
They’re flexible, lightweight, and easy to move around depending on where the pain shows up. If you’re recovering from more than one surgery—or just want a solid, go-anywhere cold pack—these are total must-haves.
This one’s designed to contour right over your shoulders and upper spine. It has a soft plush lining and stays cold longer than you'd expect. After my ACDF, it helped relieve tension without putting pressure on the surgical area.
I used these little guys tucked inside the front opening of my C-collar to cool the incision site. They’re lightweight, soft-backed, and don’t get too icy to touch. Perfect for post-op neck cooling where you need gentle, targeted relief, especially early on when you're sensitive.
Just be careful not to press or push them too hard against the incision or collar area, comfort should never come at the cost of healing.
